bit of inspiration
When you stand up, you are gonna be shot back down
When you are down, you are gonna be stepped on
Its no secret you will fall down, you will stumble,
you will get pushed, you will land square on your face
But every time that happens, you get back on your feet
You get up just as fast as you can
No matter how many times you need to do it
Remember this success has bee defined as
'getting up one more time than you have been knocked down'
Nothing is free and living aint easy
Life is hard, real hard, incredibly hard
You fail more often than you win
Nobody is handing you anything
Its upto you to puff up your chest
strecth your neck and overcome all the difficult
the nasty, the mean, the unfair
You want more than what you have now, PROVE IT
you wanna be the best there is get out there and EARN IT
once you decide that you will know where it is that you wanna be
and you wont stop pushing forward until you get there
thats how winners are made
at the end of the day, success is what we all want
we all want to win and the race will be won
there is no doubt about that,
so come on.. get on top, run faster, dream bigger
live better than you ever have before
this is in you, you can do this
DO IT FOR YOURSELF
PROVE IT TO FOR YOURSELF

Excerpts from the sporting truth

Few of the amazing pieces from his conversation during the talk which couldn't stop me applauding the grace of this marvelous commentator
Basically if someone talks about Sachin how can you stop loving it.. so the best of my picks are quotes on Sachin
choice #1, About Sachins Sydney innings and why he chose not to play cover drive which got him out through out the series
"..never try to understand genius"
choice #2,
"..there is no Indian festival without Tendulkar"
choice #3,
"..there is a Tendulkar in all of us, all we have to do, we have to find those singles when things are not happening the right way"
choice #4,
"..at the age of 16 in Pakistan, Tendulkar had to be taught how to respect bowlers"
Some of the catchy ones after this...
About Indian Young Players
".. most of them are filled with ego and arrogance that you don't need a bowler to get them out"
"..indians went to srilanka with 1.25 bowlers.. half in harbhajan, one-third in ishanth and about .1 in mithun"
About Kumble and his commitment
his physio thought he was joking when he wanted to play with a broken joke, when he realized he actually wanted his request.."please don't appeal"
Harshas quote on it "..telling Kumble not to appeal is as impossible as asking sreesanth not to open his mouth"
About what you are good and what you are not
"..if you cant play test cricket, talk about it" (on his life)
Something we had in common (about interview at IIM)
like him i was never nervous about the interview (he felt he would never make it, i had the feeling i had better choices in my life).. "Never think about failures"
and the best one.. when he was asked how did he manage to incorporate these advices in his life and how it attributed to hi success he smiled and answered
'i didn't...'

A reminder to forget
I found the airport small and very comfortable. I had never walked along the airstrip all the way to the craft before. Even Kozhikode airport was far far bigger. Strangely after boarding the 'Air India' flight i found the airport wall was very close to the runway. Even though i have no clue whether the wall played any part in the accident that occurred two days back, i had this feeling, what would happen if there occurs a small error during take-off or landing on this strip. There were again two strips and i am not sure on which one the accident happened.
A news link
This story sort of confirms my thoughts are actually pointless and the length was fine enough.
Still... This accident news which took away 158 lives, was the first thing i heard on my first morning in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Paris. Since i didn't know the exact reason the news haunted me whole day even in the enchanting city.
For most including me, this will be just another news that will be flushed out of the memory soon.
For those who were flying to meet the dear and near, for those who were working in the middle east to make their children would smile, for those who had dreams, for those who have lost their beloved..
May the 158 souls rest in peace.

The three euros
1. You have to do a web check-in, a print a boarding pass for your own. So reduced number of staffs and fixed costs in the form of printing machines
2. For every check-in baggage you have to pay around 4 Euros extra
3. They have some add-on taxi offers (from 20 to 40 euros were profit sharing happens i guess)
4. Ryan air doesnt fly to busy airports. Moreover some of the airports they are flying does not warrant taxes.
5. There are no daily flights in same route, which means efficient utilization of flights
6. Different mode of payments are charged in different ways. Mastercard debit is free while visa cards we have to pay around 5 euros extra
7. By canceling you literally dont get anything back
The worse part is the number of complaints you see regarding the delayed and canceled flights. Even to talk at the customer desk you have to pay. Still when Lufthansa's and air KLM charges few hundreds of euros i guess it is worth taking a ticket for less than 10 plus have a travel insurance for say 5 and get alternate flights (get it reimbursed by the insurance) in case the flight is canceled. If air travel can be provided so cheaply, how come the indian providers are all running on losses and why they keep on increasing the charges.
More to come once i experience Ryan air!!!

Lets go Dutch!!
Now after a week at Maastricht, Netherlands i know what it is being a dutch!!
House of the president,Maastricht University Jo Ritzen
The prez calls everyone home for dinner, greets everyone personally, asking about the facilities and other professors at the university treating you like someone special.
At the university you can walk in to anyone's office. I have always had the privilege to walk in to the offices of university's back home (thanks to my dad) and even at the IIM its the same. Here i just had to walk to deans office,he walks with me to my office and takes care everything is fine. A nice feeling to have when you are away from home. I wonder how a graduate student in India will feel (or whether he will dare to) walking to university Vice-Chancellors office. When my dads office was accessible to anyone anytime, i had wondered why he was doing that (The land were you have the SFI's :P).. But now i realize what European education will do.
Train to Amsterdam central
I took wrong train from Schipol to Amsterdam Central. The ticket checker tells i am on the wrong train and explains how to get back. Fine till now. Can you expect an announcement made in train for us when change over station was reached. It did happen.
Every single person greets you on the way., have a good day or have a great trip. I can imagine how they would be feeling the way we treat them on our land.
Overall when you have these nice people all around, its a nice experience working. I have a polish guy, German girl another Romanian guy and the dutch working with me. Feels great and
I am loving it the dutch way!!!!

Tribute to a legend – The Appam Chuthiya
23-03-10
For the past one, one-half year I haven’t made a significant blog entry. Leave aside blog not even a good tweet. Even academic stuffs were handled only when the deadlines were too close to ignore.
Now I have around 3 hours left to board my flight to HK and there is some issue with wi-fi connection. So let me just describe one good thing I have done absolutely well and with all commitment in the last 48 hours.
Day before yesterday morning, Kerala received the biggest recognition of the millennium, yes Kochi, the most happening place will have a team in IPL 4. People spend 335 million USD for an IPL team (that’s some money ryt?) there are people who spent more.. Pune 375. And before them , the adanis with 300 is nothing. Even if we had received an UN grand to eradicate poverty we would not have been so happy I suppose. Anyhow we have an IPL team now. Guess who is on cloud 9? Sreesanth a.k.a Appam Chuthiya (wat a name sirji.. take a bow fakeiplplayer)
By the by what did I do? the the question right...
Discussion forum for all malayalees (mallus) who don’t want sreesanth in kochi IPL team
FB-> http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=110353832315191
Orkut-> http://www.orkut.com/Main#Community?cmm=99713783
Guess what, more than 100 members in less than 24 hours.
So whats the motivation behind this?
In Malayalam they say “ oru malayalikku vere oru malayalee nannavunathu sahikoolannu” (one mallu wont like the success of another”
But there is seriously nothing to envy about sreesanth. Rather I hate is arrogance, ya I belong to a generation who have seen the master called sachin playing the same game. If there is someone who should be arrogant that’s the person, but he shows that only with his willow.
Take a look at his behaviour on field.. He got what he deserved.. :P
But what about off the field
Isnt this too much?
Adichu nannakanda amma polum onnum parayunnille..pinne enthu cheyyum?
That’s why all the 'I hate sreesanth' communities have thousands of members.
I wish to see the fourth edition of IPL with a marvellous Kochi side, Sreesanth not in as captain nor as a player.
24-03-10
First day at HK.. too good a country to waste time making a blog entry
25-03-10
spared some time to post this one..

The vicious cycle
Though no problem gets aggravated here with incoming batches this can still be named a vicious cycle. When you see the incoming batch or so called fachchas its necessary to look back and understand what you have gained with one year of management education. So i decided to give a break to my preparation for the next class and try to pen down some of my thoughts.
I see similar faces; some faces with that 'attitude' and some other with the 'determination'. Some with their proud parents; why shouldn't they be, their children made it to the best business school in India
A year down the lane I was expecting a bunch of studious, hard working guys who could be categorized as 'geniuses' over here at IIMA; but what did i find here? Though i admit most of them have inborn talents and very high level of intelligence, i am seriously disappointed with most of my batchmates. Being to an institution like this just to get great jobs and to make money, but is that the purpose to be served by IIM's?. Why should i care. Then you find the recession hitting hard in all areas and find the job market down. Again you see people frustrated because they dont have a preplacement offer or they think this education has done nothing good. But in a long term perspective whatever is going to be the market situation this brand is going to take you to heights which they find hard even to think.
As far the knowledge gained is concerned, i believe i learned in this one year something including several lessons of life which i could gained from no other place else.
There was enthusiasm to write, study, blog, chat everything.. but only few remain. Hope i can carry on smoothly. I will get to see more people, learn more and what all.. I have no idea...
Let the cycles continue..

"That bald headed guy!!"

Spinned to death!!!
2nd Floor, Dorm 5, IIM-A
After the mid day nap, got up just to solve the trade-mogul puzzle ,else i would have slept for another hour. Puzzle for Day 5 is due in 5 minutes. To gain senses i need to wash my face at least. Two-three steps to the right of my room on the way to rest rooms i saw it,i couldn't believe my eyes. Am i still sleeping? Nopes..
It was true, there she lies upside down just to the left of rest room entrance door.
It was today afternoon that we had fight for her, me and my neighbour David and to my frustration, he won and i had to wait for 133 minutes as signaled by her.
And now..
I called out for help. . Guess David heard...
Two weeks back...
Inmates of Dorm-5 saw her for the first time. We had only seen the old grandma in first floor till date as far as washing and all was concerned. Now here she is and to the envy of guys in the first floor she will be serving the second floor. The brand new IFB Senorita DX fully automatic washing machine. Well packed and quality tested. Not yet installed because of some water inlet issues.
Today morning again when i got up from sleep, and at the same place two technicians were installing the new machine and even before that David had a bucket full of his stinky clothes ready. Its so unfair to this awesome machine(it was looking amazing), putting these stuffs upfront.
But the user manual had clearly mentioned about a test run to be performed before the first usage. One litre of water to be poured in chamber two then half a spoon of detergent and put the machine in 95degree cotton mode. Its for cleaning the machine after factory test run and so. I poured in water and the machine was started for the first time.It will take 133minutes.So i still stand a chance, or to be exact my clothes still stand a chance to get the first opportunity to be washed in the brand new one. All the shirts and shorts are fed up with the grand ma whirlpool i guess.
Then the off day just went by with assignments, chats and scraps..and sleeping.. And now i am here watching her off the ground. It was placed on the lifted floor part of keeping the washing machine itself. But i guess since the support was not good it lost its ground while spinning or was it a suicide kind of action, Guess those clothes of David made the warranty void!!! We slowly lifted it up. All the electrical connections and water inlet tube were broken. The same chamber in which i poured the first drop of water was twisted. The front door was unlock so David took his clothes out which were dried to perfection. It had done its first duty well, before the accident.
The concerned people will come and check it soon, sincerely hope nothing happened to it... Feeling a kind of pain, don't know why...
Anyways grandma whirlpool will wash my clothes today!!!

What the hell is cricket without him
Whats Indian Cricket without Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar!!!.
View his statistics
Indian cricket since 1989 is a name.. nothing more..Tendulkar. May be India had a won a world cup before his entry to the arena, and one of course with out him, the 20-20s which is not cricket. Its the 100% commercial and entertainment mode of the worlds best game.
I have vague memories of watching cricket matches before the 90s. But after that i started watching matches because of him. I am a part of a nation that fell in love with cricket because of him.
From the day i started watching sachin batting, for each ball he faces i am tensed. If something goes wrong, chances of victory goes down by a huge margin. Or is it because i am there just to watch him play!!!For all those who says Sachin never performs well in crucial matches or for those who says Sachin performs well only when others perform, i have a simple answer. When sachin is in good form, he makes the matches simple. We get a feeling we would have won the match so easily even if Sachin hadn't contributed. There would have been situations when things went wrong, sometimes we feel its lot in case of Sachin because it has been around 20 years. Even if he makes a mistake once in a while, this time period is so large a period for the stats to lie.
Few words for those who think its time for the new generation

Giving all respect to team India captain Dhoni, his decision making abilities n for all those victories he dedicated to his 'young' team. Just count on the opportunities he had till now, talking as a winning captain/man of the match. Simple counting the man of matches Tendulkar would make Dhoni feel small and as a regular viewer i can guarantee i have heard sachin speaking only about how well he got support from others or how well the ball was coming to bat. Where as Mr.Captain always tell about his team selection and about the young battalion. All the veterans were once sachin's seniors, or played and retired while he was still playing for the nation. I bet he never spoke a word mentioning he was better than them. Instead others spoke for him. They admired the genius. And for those who doubted his abilities he always answered with his bat.
As an Indian cricket fan, i seriously wonder why the selectors are in a hurry to make Indian cricket charmless.
What can replace the master blaster??
The question is clearly phrased, its not "who", but a "what" that can replace Sachin. I guess BCCI is trying their best. They know there is no one who can replace sachin. Can some "IPL" replace the love we have for Sachin,
simply because admiration and love can not be bought by money. I believe its his grace that still keeps Indian Fans with the team. A word of disappointment from this person can create chaos. He presence itself makes such a difference in our team. He eases out pressure from everyone else. While the lee's and murali's tries to pick him, its easy for others to play their normal game.Adding a word on injustice shown to him.
Full support to Ganguly who mentioned sachin deserves the time to decide when to say adieu to the game. I wonder whether seriously he gets injured often or is he being dropped from the side? Someone like Sachin deserves a position in Indian team if he feels he can deliver it for India. For someone with the quality and caliber is age a deciding factor? Look at the aussies, Its when Mcgrath n Gilly felt its time. Pouring out the truth, I may not watch India playing without Sachin, which might happen in near future. Thousands like me might find happiness in watching EPL n F1 instead.
What would have been their fame, if he hadn't been there
Though they scored in excess of ten thousands, they always received fame and appreciation less because of him. Ever wondered what more they would have become if he was not there? Or may be they became the Ganguly, Dravid, Laxman, Kumble n all because of him.. who knowsAll i know is.. I love Indian Cricket because of him...
Its all about Sachin
"Cricketers like Sachin come once in a lifetime and I am privileged he played in my time," said Pakistan legend Wasim Akram
Lara said: "For me, the best batsman in the world is Sachin Tendulkar. I admire Jacques Kallis' consistency and Ricky Ponting, with the purple patch he's going though. Everybody gets 15 minutes of fame. But if there's one person I've admired over a 15-year period, it's definitely Sachin."
If I've to bowl to Sachin, I'll bowl with my helmet on. He hits the ball so hard: Dennis Lillee
"When sachin goes out to bat, it beyond chaos... its a frantic appeal by a nation to one man"..Hayden on Sachin
"He is 99.5 per cent perfect. I'd pay to see him:" Viv Richards.
India's fortune will depend on how many runs the little champion scores. There is no doubt Tendulkar is the real thing: Sunil Gavaskar
I saw him playing on television and was struck by his technique, so I asked my wife to come look at him. Now I never saw myself play, but I feel that this player is playing much the same as I used to play, and she looked at him on Television and said yes, there is a similarity between the two... his compactness, technique, stroke production... it all seemed to gel: Sir Donald Bradman.

Mama Mia and rebirth of a Mallu for four days!!!
Time you spend with your loved ones, family...friends... It flies like anything. I feel like it was just few hours back that flied to bangalore and now here i am back sitting all alone again.
Its so easy a life with no mails, no calls, nothing to do. Enjoyed the movies i saw, including Mama mia. coz if i were here, i would have been worrying about the time i am wasting. The food i had was tastier coz i was not having just another lunch or dinner but i was having food ( though the stuffs like crab n seer fish taste amazing whenever u have it).
Being a son, being a brother, being a true friend... everything adds meaning to your life. I have heard my bro telling he spends at least an hour a week just to call up old acquaintances. I had never realized how happy people become when they realize you were there spending some time just to meet them. Its not always about what you are. But its always about what you were. Its your "were's" that make your "nows".
Being in harmony with nature, knowing what you need to do, doing what you like, taking a day off, simply those few things add a lot to your life. Driving through the Bangalore roads, still remembering all those shortcuts, bribing bangalore police , an icecream from corner house, a movie at the forum mall and above all moms-food!!
Oh, i how hard i miss everything..Waiting for the next vacation..Wondering how to start the readings for slot three.
When i know the time is ready to start all over again, i do adhere!!!
Inspired by Mama Mia
Lyrics of Winner takes it all.. meaningful
I don't wanna talk
About the things we've gone through
Though its hurting me
Now its history
Ive played all my cards
And thats what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play
The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
Thats her destiny
I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking Id be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules
The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
Its simple and its plain
Why should I complain.
But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name?
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say
Rules must be obeyed
The judges will decide
The likes of me abide
Spectators of the show
Always staying low
The game is on again
A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all
I don't wanna talk
If it makes you feel sad
And I understand
You've come to shake my hand
I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
Seeing me so tense
No self-confidence
But you see
The winner takes it all
The winner takes it all......

Former president Dr. Kalam is now an IIM-A prof!!!
I happened to attend a session on Entrepreneurial ship by Prof Anil Gupta, which made a huge impact on the way i used to think. Prof Gupta and Kalam are together taking the course GRIT(Global and Resurgent India through Innovative Transformation), for the first time this year and most probably will become a regular course next year onwards. So i have my chances of attending it next year.
All of a sudden, a twist in the tale, it was announced 20 first years would be allowed to attend the course(as a non-credit one). It doesn't matter whether it has credits or not. People are getting a chance to attend Dr.Kalam's class. Me too applied along with my profile and all. But telling the truth, i had very less expectation of getting through.
It was a week before the list of selected students was published, and i was so happy to see my name. I was selected for the fourth pillar-"A nation where education with value system is not denied to any meritorious candidates because of societal or economic discrimination." Classes starting September 13th. Since we had regular classes during the first years will be attending evening interactions with Dr.Kalam.
And today was the day. At 3:45, i met him for the first ever time in my life. The first thing he told was a story. Something that happened when he was 10 years old , it was related to importance of integrity. Words cant describe the feelings, i was in a state of excitement. Even ecstasy won't be an apt word to describe the feeling. I used to keep a quote with Prof.Kalam's (Till now he used be an Indian president, but now he is my professor :)) snap at my workstation.
"Dreams are not what you see while sleeping, but something that will never let you sleep..."
Now i am listening to him, sitting in his introductory class. He was also excited to teach us. For IIM-A he had emotional attachments too, Vikram Sarabhai founded IIM-A n the place where he excelled as a scientist, ISRO. Most of the session was filled with his real life experiences including that at Kerala assembly and Thumba. He was prepared well as all the prof's here. do Even i got chance to speak to him. An amazing reply to my query "Don't you think inclusive policy by the government in the higher education sector denies opportunity to the meritorious?", seriously made me feel reservations are not that bad as i think.
Another amazing qualities all leaders have, for someone's question, he didnt know something. Without hesitation he told that. Who all admits things like that? Only true leaders. Admiration is the only think you will have after that.
Just few months after joining here itself i feel i gained a lot from IIM-A. This is an awesome place to be in..
Waiting for Prof. Kalams next class...
PS:Forgot to mention, Dr.Kalam is a person with a great sense of humour.

One of those sleepless nights at IIM-A
After welcoming the weekend with a nice movie, "Rock-On", I am in good mood to write.
Let me write about of those usual nights here at IIM-A in an unusual way. Two doctoral students(one of course me!!) who always shared d same dream, publish a book!! The movie also tells the story of similar people who deferred their dreams for their future! Or is it a future!!!
Let me try to recollect chunks of our google chat yesterday (DC1: doctoral candidate 1, me and other guy DC2).. It went well some what like this
DC2: u know that life is going haywire when beyond the very
DC1: how come??
DC2: u know that life is going haywire --when ur dearest wish is that there be no quiz tomorrow
when ur vision of future ends with the very next day.when u feel guilty for sleeping 5 hrs a day
when life, death, friendship and family pales before a 5 percent weighted quiz
DC1: i can understand but still i admit a good one :)
DC2: i am just practising on u. Intend to write a full blog on it
DC1: nice
DC2: pls spare me of ur indifferent comments
Questions about the insignificance of one's actions.
The unbearable lightness of being...OR IS IT REALLY SO LITE?? That would be one thing I can accept after a drunken stupor in the wee hours of morning ..something when I am wasted and not normal...anywayz not in my rite senses.. To ppl who say decisions don't find, I just ask --are they so light so as to belittle its significance in the longer run...IS ONCE REALLY NONCE?? Then the decision maker in question is just as insignificant and unworthy of existing as the decision itself...
DC1: i was planning to write about one of those days
DC2: me too was thinking about the book again
the one i intend to write
DC1: :)
But not now. Do financial markets!!
Survive, struggle for the life
wen u r sure u will survive, think about d future
till then the future is limited to our tomorrows!!
DC2: my future isn’t confined to the red bricked walls of this 'institution'
DC1: if a 5% quiz cost u one year in your life
It does matter
Didnt u wish for 5 years in your life to be within these walls?
Now when u r here.. u want to break the walls n reach out for the outer world
hah?
DC2: I had wished for a long time that I would be within these walls..
DC1: Surviving here means.. the world outside will be under ur feet
Hero.. wake up!!!
just few days of hard work.. thats all wats required for ur success
DC2: I was never a hero and might never be
DC1: everyone born, are born as heros!!
when u start thinking.. u lose way
but when u think, think the right way, u know u r!!
DC2: When u walk on the edge, the way down at times seems the better option :)
DC1: but there is always a way UP!!
the road less travelled... :)
chose it, n it will make all the difference in ur life
DC2: u can confirm and be on the rest or break free and still be the best..maybe in ur own eyes alone ..but that might be what counts ultimately
the way up is the oldest road known...
u can confirm and be like the rest
DC1: the path to go up, can be unknown
And being the common is not always wrong.
when u think, u r a hero... u r!!
atleast thats what i think, and the way i want to think
DC2: not me.. but that would be the path i would like to try out now
DC1: all the best wishes
DC2: i might want to do something less but that has to be my decision not someone else’s
Maybe after 5 years
DC1: hope we can be companions in the road ahead
DC2: sorry i am not gay...and i have already found my companion ;)
maybe u can try david
DC1: loser!!! u spoiled the whole mood
anyways its 1:38
let me sleep
DC2: 1:46, u got it wrong
DC1: but lots to read before i sleep
"Trustme"-Rajashree is yet to be finished
Dude u continue with ur corporate finance
DC2: finish and then gimme
Wake me up at 7 or the earliest u wake up
have to read Financial reporting
I am ordering two books online
hope it will reach here by the time our exams finish
DC1: Look guys who chose the road ahead are already done with readings n u!!
:)
Which all books?
DC2: the unbearable lightness of being ...milan kundera
you are here ...meenakshi reddy madhavan
DC1: i know atleast the authors’ name
:)
DC2: me too
have been wanting to read that book for long
published long back
DC1: time to say good bye for one more night at iima
DC2: sleepless at iima
DC1: good night amidst the portfolios betas n CAPMs...
DC2: lemme muse over my pitiful life for some more time and then get back to reality.
DC1: bye
DC2: never say bye.. atleast untill u die
DC2: wow i am in form today
DC1:I am also not bad!! But today is no more and will never again be a today! The tomorrows are waiting!!
Thus ended one more of our days at the best b-school in Asia-Pacific!!
